Hissing Roach

One of the largest cockroaches that can be found is the hissing cockroach. The interesting fact about this type of cockroach is that contrary to the belief about other cockroaches, this type is wanted as a pet. This wingless cockroach can climb up glass as well as logs. Opposite from the common sugar eating cockroach, this one enjoys its veggies. Another interesting fact about this insect is that it generally is a host for mites that live on the cockroach’s back. Overall, this is, oddly enough, a desired cockroach instead of a hunted one.

When you think of a hissing cockroach, the question might come to mind: what makes it hiss? Most cockroaches can make some sort of noise, but it is from rubbing their legs or antenna together. However, this particular cockroach can hiss two ways. Either in a way to bother others or to fight. Mostly, this type of cockroach will hiss in order to bother other cockroaches, insects or probably even humans. Only a male cockroach challenging another male can hiss to fight. Also, it is good to remember that a male will hiss substantially more than a female. When they hiss, the air is being pushed out all the way through tiny little holes found all over their body.

Some people enjoy the idea of having a hissing cockroach as a pet. The best way to keep it in a home is to place it in some kind of box with a covering, since of course, they can climb straight up. The best food feed the cockroach is veggies, but you can also give it some protein. Keep in mind that a place for it to hide away is necessary for this type of pet. In reality, these have the possibility to be great pets since they do not bite and they cannot fly away. All they need is food, water and, like all cockroaches, darkness.

Overall, when researching different types of cockroaches, the hissing cockroach is, in many ways, the most tolerable. Because of this, they have been on television, used for jewelry and the center of multiple comedy acts. There are some that would still try and exterminate these cockroaches, but maybe after realizing that they are harmless and eat nothing more than vegetables, some might change their minds. Most would cringe at this thought, but some would pay money to have a pet like this in their home.
